We slightly redesigned schematics, etched our own PCBs, laser cut the enclosure and altered the code. Though not quite complete, we managed to show our progress at the Makerfaire.

 Having learned many new skills,how to design PCBs, etch them ourselves, solder components and having a firm grasp of the design,  we are now looking to make some more drastically alterations. We are calling our new project OpenerPCR.

OpenerPCR – Our Own Mod

After having learned from the OpenPCR clone project we decided that the designs could be simplified and made even cheaper. The name is not meant as a sleight to the OpenPCR project, our design follows their lead but we are attempting to do all the design work in open-source software as well as making the files part of the public domain, hence the name.

The idea is to make heavier use of arduino’s ADC, use relays for temperature control, simplify the PCB and make the case more compact and 3D printable.

DIY Transilluminator

Visualizing your PCR reaction often requires a transilluminator. Using blue LEDs and sheets of acrylic we aim to make our own cheap but reliable version. Several DIY versions exist and have been well documented. Our initial breadboard based tests were not successful but more trials will be coming soon.

In the single molecule biophysics group at the University of Groningen, slides need to be cleaned thoroughly before being able to do almost all the experiments carried out in the lab. Currently there exists no good solution to do this for large numbers of slides and current holders were not designed for this application. The idea is to create a holder for roughly 40 slides that is resistant to an oxygen plasma and different chemical rinses. Once completed this project should be able to reduce the time to results and accelerate the pace of research.

Naturally, all designs are open source.
